Section 1: Why this guide?
Purpose
Having a child with special needs can be time consuming. Just completing activities of daily living may leave you with no time to simply play with or enjoy experience leisure with your child. This website was created to be both an encouragement and resource to aid parents in understanding and appreciating the value and importance of leisure throughout you child’s life.
Audience
The website was designed with you, the parent in mind. Positive leisure experiences during the developmental years, ages 3-21, are critical to the overall well being of individuals with disabilities, as leisure experiences allows for development in all domains of functioning including mental, physical, social, and emotional.
Goals
Using this resource you will discover:
• Information about recreation and leisure opportunities for your child.
• The key people who interact with your child in home, school, community, and the work place.
• Federal education legislation that supports your child’s rights to receive leisure education services.
• Federal mandates that afford the child the right to access community recreation experiences.
